Prerequisites

Steps




The installation of SAP IDES S/4HANA 1610 on VMware vSphere consists of the following steps:


  • Create a virtual machine for SAP IDES S/4HANA 1610 on VMware vSphere.



  • Install SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications 12 SP3 on the virtual machine.



  • Create and mount partitions and copy the SAP installation files to the virtual machine.



  • Install SAP HANA Database 2.0 SPS04 Revision 40 on the virtual machine.



  • Install SAP S/4HANA IDES Application Server ABAP 7.51 SP02 on the virtual machine.



  • Install SAP S/4HANA IDES Frontend (NetWeaver Gateway) Server ABAP 7.51 SP02 on the virtual machine.



  • Activate the SAP S/4HANA IDES Content for ABAP Stack on the virtual machine.



  • Install SAP HANA Studio Revision 122.05 and SAP GUI on your Windows or Linux machine (optional).



  • Connect to SAP IDES S/4HANA 1610 and explore its features and capabilities.



In this article, we will only cover the first step, which is creating a virtual machine for SAP IDES S/4HANA 1610 on VMware vSphere. The rest of the steps will be covered in subsequent articles.


Step 1: Create a virtual machine for SAP IDES S/4HANA 1610 on VMware vSphere




To create a virtual machine for SAP IDES S/4HANA 1610 on VMware vSphere, follow these steps:


  • Log in to your VMware vCenter Server using VMware Workstation or VMware Fusion.



  • Select your VMware vSphere server and click on Create/Register VM.



  • Select Create a new virtual machine and click Next.



  • Enter a name for your virtual machine, such as SAP_IDES_S4HANA_1610, and select a location for it, such as a datacenter or a folder. Click Next.



  • Select a compute resource for your virtual machine, such as a cluster or a host. Click Next.

To install SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications 12 SP3 on the virtual machine, follow these steps:


  • Connect the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications 12 SP3 installation ISO file to the virtual machine's CD/DVD drive. You can do this by right-clicking on the virtual machine, selecting Edit Settings, and choosing CD/DVD Drive. Then, select Datastore ISO File and browse to the location of the ISO file. Click OK.



  • Power on the virtual machine and press F2 to enter the BIOS setup. Go to the Boot tab and change the boot order to boot from the CD/DVD drive first. Press F10 to save and exit.



  • The installation wizard will start. Select Installation and press Enter.



  • Select your language and keyboard layout and click Next.



  • Accept the license agreement and click Next.



  • Select your time zone and date and time settings and click Next.



  • Select your installation mode. You can choose between New Installation, Update, or Repair. For this article, we will choose New Installation and click Next.



  • Select your system role. You can choose between SAP Server, SAP HANA Server, or Custom Role. For this article, we will choose SAP Server and click Next.



  • Select your partitioning scheme. You can choose between Guided Setup, Expert Partitioner, or Import Mount Points. For this article, we will choose Guided Setup and click Next.



  • Select your disk for installation. You can choose between Available Disks or Custom Disk Selection. For this article, we will choose Available Disks and select the disk that has 2 TB of space. Click Next.



  • Review the proposed partitioning layout and click Next. The installation wizard will create a swap partition, a root partition, a home partition, and a /sapmnt partition for SAP data.



  • Select your network settings. You can choose between DHCP or Static IP Address. For this article, we will choose Static IP Address and enter an IP address, a subnet mask, a gateway, and a DNS server for the virtual machine. Click Next.



  • Enter a hostname for the virtual machine, such as sap-ides-s4hana-1610.example.com, and click Next.



  • Enter a root password for the virtual machine and click Next.



  • Select your software selection. You can choose between Default System or Custom System Role Selection. For this article, we will choose Default System and click Next.



  • Review the installation summary and click Install. The installation wizard will start copying files and installing packages.



The installation of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications 12 SP3 on the virtual machine will take some time. Once it is finished, you will see a message saying "Installation Completed". Click Finish to reboot the virtual machine.
